Maske

Maske is the German word for mask, it is also a common miss spelling of the word mask.Throughout this blog we shall use the German spelling (thought I would put that in just so you don't think I can't spell)
A masquerade maske is a wonderful thing. When worn it allows the wearer to cast aside traditional social behaviour, encourages them to hide behind the anonymity and exhibit the inner person that they often hide. This can  be a liberating experience but can also lead to rather hedonistic behaviour.
In Venice during the 16th Century masks were worn as part of every day life. They were worn by all social classes to go about their everyday business. The wearing of a maske daily however led to Venetian society becoming decadent, with a lack of moral conduct. Masks were worn to carry out love affairs in public, for gambling, to visit brothels, by gay men so they could meet in  public. Even the monks and nuns joined in this  debauched behaviour which led to a series of decrees limiting their use to just carnival times.
So a maske is a powerful accessory, enjoy wearing it but beware its power
